  • I wouldn’t say people are pushing too hard for it, or that people are saying look she’s a women vote for her or you’re sexist. At least, I don’t think that was really the pitch before the election. ‘Its her turn’ was a blunder but at least the pitch I got from the campaign was largely 'Do you want Trump answering the warroom in the middle of the night or seasoned diplomat Hillary’ with a side of ‘Obama’s recovery was great, just look at the stocks’. I do agree about the two primary winners we have had though, they were not it. To avoid repeating myself too much here since I went into it in another comment, I think Hillary’s outsized party influence also fucked us by not giving us as full a complement of primary challengers as we should have had, and odds are one or more of them would be a woman who doesn’t have to dig herself out of decades of Washington insider dislike

    Edit: typos and styling

  • Yeah, she really did blow it. It felt like her entry into the race convinced women I would have much preferred as candidates not to enter. A lot of people don’t share my feelings about Warren in the 2020 election (mostly that her alleged betrayal is overblown, and that I thought she was the best fit as a compromise candidate between progressives and centrists), but she didn’t enter in 2016 and neither did several other high profile women, I think probably because of behind the scenes pressure from Clinton’s people in the DNC. Hell even Kamala Harris should have been in the primary in 2016. I don’t like or think either her or Warren are good people to be clear, but they’re each better than Trump or Hillary and maybe if Kamala had actually run in the 2016 primary she wouldn’t have been so bad at it by the time she was up in 2024.

Hillary’s power in the party and intimidating name recognition robbed us of a term’s worth of qualified candidates, many of them women, who didn’t want to publically go against her.

  • Most Lemmy etiquette is pretty easy to follow. Just check the sidebar for rules before you post or comment. Etiquette is slightly varied among instances, but generally be nice and you’ll do fine. You may catch bans from communities you don’t participate in depending what you post, but try not to pay it to much mind.

Some instances or communities are explicitly heavily moderated (see Blahaj, Beehaw, and others) and preemptively ban people for comments and posts elsewhere. Most likely it’s nothing personal, and you wouldn’t have gotten much from those communities if you are posting counter to their purpose.

Other than that enjoy your time here!

  • Its not good against individuals, but it keeps this from becoming a space where they can congregate and try to attract people in the pipeline already.

Of course people aren’t automatons, but people can and do often unconsciously mirror and internalize things they see as normal in a community. Defederation does do a good job of keeping the bulk of Lemmy from being a Nazi bar, so that will happen less here. Its not a perfect solution, but its better than reddit in that regard.

I don’t know why you keep bringing up tankies, you do realize they founded the site right? I don’t think that gives them any special right to be here, but its also hard to imagine Lemmy without tankies. Its a part of what makes the space unattractive to fascists, and I’m not going to pretend I don’t enjoy seeing Hexbears tear their posts into pieces. I think the numbers of tankies here is a lot lower than some users would have you believe, and the main instances are largely defederated or default blocks. I’m fairly content with how that is working out.

As for the rest, you won’t be able to debate fascism into the ground. Fascists have to be crushed through collective action. People differ on what that would look like, in my ideal we would band together march through the streets and dismantle the engines of war that fascists rely on. Burn the factories, abolish their institutions, and set about the work of preparing the world for climate disasters. They’re not going to fall over and stop being fascists because of perfect inescapable logic. They’re going to stop being fascists when the tools they would use to oppress us both physical and cultural are broken and they see they cannot win. Your debate tactics will have a place breaking their cultural tools, but it has to be accompanied by a large enough unified front to make fighting back infeasible, and the removal of avenues for them to retake control by physical destruction of weapons, weapons manufacturing, and vehicles of war including those used by the police.

  • I ended up on .zip, the switch was mostly painless, just a couple small tech issues and having to get rid of a default block. I didn’t have any communities I managed, so not really applicable. I did consider Piefed, but I’m satisfied with Lemmy and Jerboa, and many accounts I see from piefed are superusers I don’t vibe with so it hasn’t drawn me. I would say the switch was pretty seemless and I didn’t grow super attached to lemm.ee because it wasn’t my first instance to shut down.

  • I worn in Automotive despite hating cars and believing the industry is fundamentally at fault for the state of the world currently (Leaded gasoline, micro plastics, and climate change) and is working on contributing to the death of privacy and owning things.

There are a few different things that help me sleep at night, though I don’t sleep well in general.

First, I have poor self image. This means both that I struggle to believe I can find work elsewhere and also that I don’t feel like I’m good at my job. You might think that would make me want to leave more and believe me I do, but it also kind of Uno reverses the act of working for them. If I think I’m bad at my job and my job is at an evil corporation, then I’m actively draining the organization of money that could be spent elsewhere.

Second my work mostly doesn’t touch on the things that are vile and awful about the industry. I’m a programmer and my work primarily deals with displays and control interfaces. A display not coming up isn’t going to harm the industry in any meaningful way, but it will impact a person using the end product. Since that’s where most of my work lies it is easy to rationalize doing those things.

I’m unhappy my industry exists and has done such damage to the world, but until I can find something better I’m stuck.

  • Police involvement may help get him to back off, but be prepared for cops to ignore or minimize what she’s going through. Many cops are stalkers and abusers themselves. From personal experience having someone else to corroborate can help and also having extensive documentation can help get a PPO. I wish you the best of luck, its really not an easy situation and can escalate quickly.
