Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Does anyone have any hopeful success stories of surviving abusive parents and finding happiness later in life?English
5·20 days agoI made it as far as “making a decent living, not a huge asshole”.
Obviously, it would be nice to have more/be more, but I count just
meetingkeeping this up as a win.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you think about post longevity on lemmyEnglish
1·27 days agoI think the problem is that when a user deletes their own post, everyone else also loses access to the comments under that post.
According to the screenshot, the Lemmy 1.0 update should change it so that only the original post is deleted, but access to the comments is preserved.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have you ever met a truly evil person? What happened?English
31·1 month agoTo me, evil is when you know the thing you’re doing is morally wrong, you have the option to do anything else (including doing nothing at all) and you do it anyway.
I can make space for people who were trained on bad behavior.
I can make space for people doing the best they can in bad situations.
But I have met people who looked “normal” and could have easily not done the bad thing they were doing to someone else.
When you call them out, some will get defensive. They still have shame.
But the evil ones had this look like a child who knew they were getting away with something. And the something was hurting someone else.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•The manga reading app kotatsu is shutting down, the repo is archived. What are some alternative?English
6·1 month agoHaven’t seen Doki mentioned yet. It’s the official successor to Kotatsu.

Kotatsu-Redo is a fork by a new guy. At this stage, they’re basically the same, so I’m waiting it out.

Yea, I don’t think we’ll ever be able to disable that kind of thing.
But this addresses at least one of the main concerns people had with allowing quote-posting.
The update is notable because quote posts have historically fuelled negative behaviour on other platforms, where they are often used for public ridicule or so-called “dunking.” (source)

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Every single performance of “The Song That Never Ends” has ended.English
21·1 month agoWhen one person stops singing, the curse is passed to someone else, somewhere else in the world.
We just won’t realize until after the nuclear war, when there’s only two people left, passing the song back and forth until they are finally, mercifully taken by the radiation poisoning.
Authors can limit and disable quoting, both globally on the new Posting Defaults page, and individually on specific posts. Also, when quoted, they can easily revoke the use of their post.
Nice.

21·2 months agoThis is the kind of unimportant but fascinating thing I wish we had a community for.
Just… hundreds of people around the world posting their breaker panels.

A population being halvsied just doesn’t hit the same, you know?

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Waymo CEO Says Society Is Ready for One of Its Cars to Kill SomeoneEnglish
1·2 months agoNo, keep it scaled to the company.
I’m tired of state leadership taking bribes from big businesses instead fines and taxes.
Too many have been taking the “easier and cheaper” route for too long, and that’s a big part of why we’re in the capitalist hellscape we’re currently in.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Has Trick-or-Treating died in your area, and what is to blame?English
16·2 months agoThis comment made me realize we don’t have sidewalks, either.
I haven’t seen a sidewalk outside of the nearest city in… years.
And if they have some kind of shared vision because of technology or telepathy, then make it hurt them them when one goes down.
Or make it make sense, like they have to spend a turn to contact the others, or they shout to alert other NPCs, but that just means there know there’s a threat in this general area, not “we now have magic GPS for the next five minutes, and then I guess it must have been the wind.”
Real-time games with an intentional omission of a pause feature.
Agreed. I can understand in MMOs, but if I’m the only one playing, the game should stop when I say stop.
At least make it an option in the accessibility settings if it’s not “the developers’ intended experience”.
