I’m gonna ask my Abuelo for a USB so I can run Etcher and Yunohost for my instance. I want to choose the name craigsworld.net (like how lemmy.world’s creator chose lemmy.world). How does the site naming through Yunohost work? How much does it cost?
Protip: Don’t announce to the world what domain(s) you intend to buy, because then someone might get to it first.
Ha, I’ve heard that even domain hosts themselves will jack up the price of a domain later after you search up its availability if you don’t pay for it then and there! All powered by an algorithm, too…
Additionally to this do not use GoDaddy, they snag good domains in front of your nose.
Yup, can confirm. Go into it knowing what you would like it to be, and have a list of tlds you are okay with, plan to purchase once and only once. I like namecheap personally.
Certain TLD (e.g. .com, .net, .xyz) will cost a different amount per year to register. I use porkbun as well. A .com or .net may be $12.50+ per year. The cheapest domain is 9 numbers and .xyz from porkbun at 1.22/yr (e.g 123456789.xyz) but isnt as memorable. I use one of those just for external access otg with a cron script for updating the dns entries.
Also remember to hide the whois info because you will immediately start getting calls from scammers that scrape the phone number and call you telling you that you need to pay them to finish setting things up
Generic process is to register the domain, set up the DNS entries to point to your server IP, and if theres any dynamic DNS setup in your software, to enter the api key from your registrar and the domain so it can update it if your IP ever changes.
Although 420698008 isn’t bad…
