  • We need to think about using technology to help people work less. Not just fatten profits.

It’s such a hard topic to deal with because you have to tackle the concept of ownership.

As it currently stands in capitalist economies the owner, as the title implies, owns the means to increase productivity that would enable people to work less, but since they are the owners they see it is morally repugnant to have other people who did “nothing extra” get “more” money as the math is essentially: less work, same pay = greater value, except you didn’t provide any greater value to them, the machine/technology that they own did.

    It’s a shitty situation for sure :(

  • The downside to that is it is much harder to continue working as you age depending on the trade. Usually the “best” route there is to start early, learn what you can, and go independent eventually hiring other people to do the hard stuff you no longer can do.

Also need to be careful specializing… I went super specific and well… Yeah… Ice cream refrigeration machines aren’t exactly ubiquitous. I should have stuck with residential HVAC but I hated crawling under houses and being on call all night :/

I currently work in a factory (yeah I’m just chock full of bad decisions) and I can say from what I’ve gathered from my coworkers being a “machinist” isn’t so much of a viable trade anymore. Everyone pays like shit now.

  • I really don’t think so. The vast majority of internet users just stick with whatever simple thing that serves their need. Lemmy isn’t the most difficult thing, but if reddit already exists and is more popular then people won’t be leaving that for this if they haven’t already.

The boost in people coming here last year was a “last straw” kind of deal from people using reddit who cared enough about not supporting their shit decisions, but by now that has died down and we’ve seen from recent articles that reddit “won” and they have a metric fuckton of users.

  • I’m going to have to agree with everyone here, we won’t know anything Tuesday night and more than likely won’t know anything for a week or more.

Pennsylvania is essential to both parties and they have an absolutely absurd law that prevents them from counting mailed ballots until election night so that state won’t have results for quite some time. Tie that into the thousands of lawsuits the GOP is ready to file and the whole first half of November is going to be irritating.

  • Yes, people from cities moving to rural towns does impact housing prices which should be a net benefit for the town as it bring in income from outside. It could be a negative when the volume of outsiders is high enough to displace long term residents, but in a vacuum people moving into an area that isn’t overpopulated already should be a good thing.

It’s absolutely a negative for those in the area. I’m literally priced out of the entirety of long Island now. There is literally nowhere I can afford that isn’t in an uninsurable flood zone and I’m too “worthless” to move. Anywhere with work for someone like me is just a shithole city so I just move from renting to renting in a worse environment. :/

  • I get roasted for this every time I mention it because I think people on sites like this generally fit in this category and feel personally attacked, but I honestly believe a large part of it is from WFH becoming more widespread during COVID. People were able to leave the large cities where their jobs were all located and could move wherever they wanted to so that competition for housing drives prices way way up. The few friends I do have all work in software development and all moved during COVID away from their offices and into houses. They all had a similar story “the realtor told me any house that’s on the market for more than 5 days (that’s crazy crazy short) has a major issue, stay away from those.”

Tie that into the expansion of investment companies buying houses with the intent of renting them forever and the NIMBYism that keeps new construction from being made because “My PrOpErTy VaLuE!” and it’s just a recipe for disaster…

I hate that I’m going to be stuck renting someone’s garage or basement and paying their mortgage in rent prices for the rest of my life…

  • I was never going to “find myself” and so I should have just gone to college with my friends for computer science and made the good money when jobs were easier to get even though I had no interest at all in it. Hindsight is 20/20 and all that jazz. Now I’m a worthless schmuck in a factory living in someone’s garage paying their mortgage in rent prices.

All my interests are hobbies, some of them even too expensive for me to do lol they’re nothing you can monetize.
