The Long Dark came out in 2017 and the story mode still isn’t finished yet, so I dunno if they’re the ones to be pontificating about being slow with the content lol.

A friend of mine who was learning English said that translating song lyrics from her native language into English really helped, 'cause you have to kind of get the meaning across and not just a literal translation of the words. Dunno if it works for everyone but she swore by it!

My dad went full survivalist, we ate nothing but baked beans cooked on a camping stove, and he got this portable black and white TV from somewhere that we could watch for an hour a day because it ran off a car battery lol.

I have a Firefox plugin called Tranquility Reader, which basically strips out all the ads and bullshit and gives you the article as just plain text on a white background. It also has the option to save the page as a pdf, so if I want to read something later I just do that.

I’ve visited America a bunch of times and I really like it as a place, they have amazing scenery pretty much everywhere you look, and just about every individual American I’ve met has been really nice.

BUT…

I’d never want to live there. Their healthcare system is insane (sorry Americans but it is) and politically as a nation they’re pretty bonkers. Guns, religion, general sort of global belligerence etc.

Also as an aside, San Francisco is genuinely one of the strangest places I’ve ever been to. I dunno if I was just there at a weird time, but it seemed like every single person there was either a millionaire or homeless. Absolutely nothing in between.

Sometimes that can happen with a joke - like it’s kind of mid when you first tell it, then you keep pushing it and everyone hates it, then at a certain point something breaks and it becomes the funniest thing ever for some inexplicable reason. Not saying that’s what happened with with this joke necessarily, but it is possible! Old Family Guy used to do it quite well sometimes I think.

It’s the opposite of the Lil’ Sebastian thing, where there’s that horse that everyone idolizes for no discernible reason. Although with that, there’s the one character who doesn’t understand why they do that, so maybe that’s what the Jerry thing needed? Or perhaps that would have made it even sadder lol.

I keep an extensive, unorganised mass of random notes and thoughts in Obsidian, and also a separate extensive unorganised pile of notes and thoughts in a paper notebook, thus ensuring I don’t know where anything is and rendering the whole process futile.

Mine was a Spectrum 48k lol. And not the disk one, the one that ran games off an audio cassette cause we weren’t rich.

I could see the appeal of consoles back in the day, when they were weaker specs but much cheaper and the games just worked right out of the box. But nowadays it seems like they’re just as expensive, still not as good for specs and the games are just as bug-riddled as PC games half the time. And Sony has been releasing all their big hits on PC anyway so yeah really no reason for me to get a PS5 that I can see.

I think the TV series of Station Eleven is better than the book. Not that the book is bad at all, but the show is something else.

I tried it but TBH went back to torrents. I found it to be very fiddly to get working, every single component seems to want you to pay for it (and not wanting to pay for and keep track of half a dozen streaming things is one of the main draws for piracy for me anyway) and overall it just didn’t seem worth it to find the ~1% of things I can’t find on torrents (and I didn’t even find all of them on Usenet either.)

Other people’s mileage may vary of course, but I didn’t really think it was worth it.

The thing that helped me felt very counterintuitive, but I ended up just picking one family member as a ‘main’ character, and letting the rest run on their own.

My instinct is always to try and micro-manage everyone in the household, which gets stressful quickly. If I focus on one person and let the rest just generate their own stories I tend to last a lot longer.

Or at least space them out a bit. You get one set for the first 5-10 years, and then the second set has to last you the remaining 60-70.

Getting a new set at like 35-40 seems like a more sensible system to me.

Maybe Gamepass if it got big enough?

I think Gamepass installs games to an encrypted location so you can’t go in and access them for mods etc. (someone will correct me if I’m wrong I’m sure, I don’t have Gamepass but I think I read that somewhere), and Microsoft owns a lot of big titles now (everything from Activision, Blizzard, Bethesda etc.) so presumably going forward they could make those incompatible with Proton.

That’s a lot of ifs though, and they presumably wouldn’t be able to do anything about older games that are already out there, and that’s assuming that pirates don’t just figure out how to crack them, they are a clever bunch.

And even if they did, it could only really stop Steam from officially distributing it. There are already people like GloriousEggroll making their own versions of Proton, so realistically it’d probably just become some sort of unofficial underground thing that you can still get from anywhere I’d assume.

Yeah I had the same experience. Tried it out, found it way too fiddly to set up, had to pay for stuff at every turn (and managing a bunch of subscriptions is a big part of why I hate using streaming platforms in the first place) and I really didn’t find it to be worth it just to cover the tiny fraction of things I can’t find on torrents (and which TBH I didn’t even find there anyway.) Went back to torrents as it’s like 2 clicks to download something and it covers 95% of what I need anyway.

To be fair, it’s entirely possible that I was just doing it wrong and not getting optimal results, but also I don’t want to start over and pay for a bunch of other stuff to find out.
