Photoshop has unmatched tools to get work done 15 to 30 times faster than Gimp. This does not apply to everything of course and in some niche stuff Gimp’s even faster. However what I use Photoshop for, such as removing unwanted distractions like trash cans, trash, overhead electric cables and such Gimp is like 30 years behind. It’s not realistic that someone would spend many minutes just selecting hair outline in Gimp.
Ultimately developing these tools has cost evil Adobe many millions of dollars. 1-3 extremely talented and enthusiastic programmers cannot compete with this. Then again in the near future we will either not need Photoshop anymore, or open source projects like Gimp or a more open minded fork could use Ai generated code to develop similar automated tools.

Celeste, Hollow Knight, Talos Principle, Hyper Light Drifter…
I just wish he lived a healthier life.
Many retro games are better. AA games were made with heart back then & that made it possible to make games that are incredible both in terms of artistry, grandeur and gameplay. Games like Baldur’s Gate 1-2, Chrono Cross etc are not possible in today’s climate.
On the other hand we have been handed indie games like Celeste and Hollow Knight, so I don’t know. Amazing games still exists, it’s just not really comparable.
, or you think every single person that age is a “vertical video crazy”.
Sounds about right to me ^
I think people that are very interested in TikTok largely overlap with the vertical video crazies :-)
That’s amazing. (and FF8 is best FF)
This is a really great read, but I’m less optimistic than he is.
I think the gaming industry has not existed for long enough for this to be a thing. Chrono Trigger & Chrono Cross are just as good today as they were 20-30 years ago, same for Baldur’s Gate or Jazz Jackrabbit.
One example comes to mind is Oddworld: New and Tasty. It’s fairly faithful to the original game, but at the same time the updated 3d rendered graphics failed to portray the same mysticism & gloominess. (and yes I have played Odyssey just recently on my retro PC) Not saying no one has pulled this off, but it’s like Resident Evil is the only one I can think of.
There are VERY FEW games where pop culture references need to be updated so much that this is worth it. It’s better to just make a new game with a completely new plot then.
It just occurred to me that Death Really (1995) would deserve to be talked about as well, it’s just an incredible little game.
I think Gothic 1 is much better. :p (it would totally deserve a spot in this conversation, but it’s a very highly regarded game )
You will die thousands of times, but until you reach your limit as a gamer it will never feel like banging your head against an unbreakable wall. Just moving around is so much fun in Celeste.
Celeste is the best of all time in its genre. i have put more than 100 hours in it and yet i’m still shit, but it’s just so gratifying to complete a harder screen…
This is 100% true, no contest.
DDG is on pair with google, that’s enough for me. (in some topics far better and in some far worse)
I agree, Skyrim was a huge disappointment for me.
I have set up a Linux computer for my dad just this week. As the others are saying the biggest hurdle is support. Mostly the part where reliable automated update mechanisms don’t exist. The system I created has a WM & a panel and it’s even simpler than chrome OS, but here is no way my dad could deal with a message, where apt would ask him, if he wanted to update to the maintainer’s grub version. Making an update script is very easy, but whether you use Debian stable, Ubuntu or Arch eventually some kind of intervention is going to be required beyond just typing sudo passwords…
Though truth to be told Windows has a lot of garbage problems (perhaps even more than L) as well, it’s just people have gotten used to them after 20 years of NT on desktop. On Linux at least most common problems can be solved without reinstalling the OS, on Windows the rot feels like a built in planned obsolescence sometimes, because there are many that just update their PCs instead of ever reinstalling Windows.
I’ll just use invidious, it’s a bit of a chore to use, but it’s increasingly worth it.
