Lemmy devs may have controversal political views, but their software is written with a good intention. KiwiFarms on the other hand use it to target instances.

Let’s go even further than that. Let’s say that the most annoying people around the whole Fediverse are Hexbear. On the worst days, all they do is to organize to spam specific threads, which is indeed annoying, but that’s the extent of it. KiwiFarms is responsible for harassing people until they commit suicide for the heinous crime of being weird. Anyone aware of this who wants to associate with them has no place in civilized society.

Prior to WWII, there were a lot of different conflicts where most of the main actors in WWII were involved. Spanish civil war with the coupists supported by the nazis, Germany annexing Austria and Czechia, Russia trying to occupy Finland, Italy doing whatever the fuck Italy was doing… Of course, that doesn’t mean that a world war is a necessary conclusion, but I wouldn’t blame anyone for thinking it’s a hint.

Given that the goal of this instance is to serve as a reference of the Fediverse, it is expected that it will continue to grow, and in turn, attract more attention, which due to a game of numbers also involves more trolls and enemies. Thus, the fact that the instance is being DDOS’ed right now shouldn’t be seen as a conjunctural problem, but rather a challenge that is here to stay and sometimes be a problem.

While I think it’s a good idea for lemmy.world to do it this time, relying on a police force to routinely come to our call and do something means periods during which the instance will be out while we wait for them for work. The instance, and Lemmy in general, should have more robust defenses so that calling for external help is only required at exceptional times.

Get someone killed because you irresponsibly drunk before driving and you get sent to jail. Get someone killed because you wanted to cut costs to make more money, have a slap of the wrist and perhaps pay reparations to the family and off to home you go.

Note that the EFF is a minority party that is nowhere close to getting the government. Mandela’s party, the African National Congress, is nowhere the same at all. Don’t let idiots conflate the two.

Some important distinctions that must be made:

Resisting active colonization is a fair goal, but these people aren’t calling for the expulsion of people who consciously made the decision to invade their country, but for the ethnic cleansing of the descendants of those colonizers too, which doesn’t make it any less of a call for genocide.

Reclaiming reparations and economic justice is fair. You can do it by investigating crimes committed during apartheid and finding out which wealth comes from taking advantage of an unfair economic framework based on exploitation and racism. If you go through the route of claiming “all white people in South Africa are colonizers and therefore may be stripped of property”, the logical conclusion is that a poor white dumbfuck who was born after Mandela’s rise to power, didn’t get an inheritance of some sort, but worked hard and bought a small plot of land should receive the same treatment as Elon Musk’s father, which is an insane take and not based on a desire of economic justice, but on identitarian, racist lines.

Agreed with the take that Ukraine is going to have a difficult road ahead if they want to join the EU. But that shouldn’t be the end of the discussion. We can set up EU-Ukraine deals like we have with Norway, UK, Switzerland and many other countries in the meantime. Deals to guarantee Ukraine’s defense and to provide help in the reconstruction of the country should have high priority.
