Go to hobo freight and get a cheap welder and some metal! It ain’t too hard. If you wanna be a pipe fitter or something of the sort you should get some real education, but those guys make way more than most in IT would. I know several pipe fitters that are into the 6 digit pay enough to make me consider leaving automotive…

Lol what do you do for work? Mechanic here that briefly considered computer science- id go insane locked up in an office building all day.
I originally went to college for biochem. Did not want to do the masters just wanted to do my 4 years and get to work. Found out biochem pay is pretty piss poor for the large part and good luck finding a job anyways. Switched to a business major because their easier bullshit degrees that get u better paying jobs than biochem would. Discovered I would promptly suck start a shotgun if I had to sit behind a desk every day. Now I work on land rovers every day and spin wrenches for a living. Don’t chase money, find out what you want your life to look then start to build around that. I make just enough to afford my house, and have access to an incredible shop to build my cars and bikes and jeeps (my hobby) that I couldnnever afford if i had to pay somebody else to do it. I am also able to save thousands every year between wife and I repairs and get vehicles cheaper because I can unfuck ratty cars. This gives me a better quality of living than one may expect from a mechanic. You can’t pick doing something you despise every day or you’ll be miserable forever. If u do what you love for a living not every day will be daisies, and you will grow some amount of distain for it some days. But it sure as hell beat doing something you hate every day for decades.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the biggest case of planned obsolescence you've dealt with?
4·17 days agoAn unfortunate product of our consumer society :/ nobody knows shit about the crap they use every day any more! I remember when owning a car meant learning to do spark plugs and oil changes, now most people couldn’t hang their spare on the side of the road if their life depended on it nevermind be bothered to figure out what hardware is in their porn browsing device.

2·18 days agoU can still force an install on older hardware, I did it on my old Lenovo laptop and have t had an issue! Just takes a command to make it install despite “not officially being supported”

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•I'm new to lemmy, came from reddit. What's the lemmy etiquette like? How different is it from reddiqutte?
8·30 days agoIt’s basically the same. Lemmy is kind of what reddit felt like before it got huge and astroturfed, it’s smaller which can be as much a benefit as a detriment depending what your after. I find interaction here tends to feel more human than reddit, on reddit comment threads especially in political subreddits you already know what the comments are gonna say before you get there, here i feel as though there is a bit more genuine thought. That being said Lemmy is not immune to echo chambers or trolls, as any bit of the internet is. Just use as you would use reddit honestly and just know your likely not to see as much content, but the content you see will get a more GENUINE feeling interaction. That’s my take anyhow.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do middle aged family men handle it?
2·2 months agoI used to regularly work 55-60 hour weeks. For a while between 2 jobs then at one. After a decade or so I have a house and work 45 hours a week on average, I keep feeling like I should work more as the bills are still tough but fuck I don’t miss working more than I do. If u have to do it, it doesn’t seem as bad than if you don’t. Perspective matters a lot.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Lemmings over 30 who try to stay active, what are you doing to accommodate for your incredibly decrepit bodies to avoid boo-boos?
2·2 months agoI’m 28 and my joints do funny things (knees and left elbow mainly, occasionally shoulders). Been a mechanic my whole life, been in a few car accidents, smashed u pa few dirt bikes, and shattered my arm into 4 peices a couple years ago on the road when somebody failed to yield turning left. Some days my body doesn’t agree with me but I don’t stop moving and I think that’s the biggest thing. Over winter break last year I slugged around the house for a couple days and by day 3 my left arm was sore. Wrist stiff knees popping. Got back after it and I felt fine you have to stay active even when it’s uncomfortable and you have to stay LIMBER nobody stretches enough lol

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do so many boomers and even some gen x believe so peristently that if you dressup and show up in person anywhere you will get whatever you went there for?
3·2 months agoIt still kind of works in some industries. I got my last 3 jobs, and 2 of them “weren’t hiring”, by walking into the joint and asking to talk to the boss and saying I can start in 2 weeks I juat have to give my current biss notice. In demanding industries, showing up in person makes an impression, another app on a stack of applications gets you nowhere. Lots of people apply, few can talk the talk and walk the walk or actually do the work. I the auto industry you show up and impress the foreman or manager with your knowledge and your pretty much in. I know people that work in welding and a construction that this also works for. I also have siblings that are white collar that this absolutely does nothing for. Supposeit also depends on how much of a giant corp you work for, as I never work for monolithic corporations. If I can’t meet my boss I can’t work there.
Can confirm. Left a chx calzone I’m my trunk overnight. Slept in the car really fucked up. Woke up hungry and ate the night old chicken. I spent a lot of time on the toilet that day… Surprisingly few people seem to be aware of the “danger zone” of food, after 2 hours out even rice will grow harmful bacteria and such. Better safe than sorry if u don’t know if it can sit out, don’t let it sit out. Your gut will thank you later!
I was born in 97, also expected to just “memorize” the tables. I never did, and despite my teacher in 3rd grade insisting we would never have a calculator on us at all times, I do in fact have a calculator (phone) in my pockets at all time to do menial math for me.
Use it or loose it! I used to work with a 72 year old mechanic that could still work like a bull. Better shape than any other 70 year olds I had met. Just gotta remember not to pull too many stupid stunts in your youth…
