Oh no! I guess I’ll have to continue not doing business with the giant pile of shit that is Chase bank.

Ah man. I grew up in an Evangelical Christian family, specifically Independent Fundamental Baptist. The most conservative of conservative Christians. The kind of Baptists who think Southern Baptists are “liberal”. I remember when I had my first girlfriend in High school and my parents thought I might maybe possibly have had sex one time. I had not. At least not at that point. They Flipped. Their. Shit.
Yesterday my toddler comes up to me and says, “daddy, build block tower?” So I tell her to go get her blocks, which she does. We built a block tower, knocked it down (which makes her giggle), built it again, etc.
A decade ago I was in a horribly toxic marriage and honestly didn’t think I would ever have kids. Today, I have an awesome wife and three kids. I love all of them and I enjoy getting to spend time with them. I never would have imagined myself being where I am today and I am reminded often that I am a very lucky man.
If I was a Boeing shareholder, I would be mad as a wet hen right about now. Amid a string of phenomenally bad business decisions that culminated in the flying [sorta] tin can that is the 737 MAX, Boeing is handed an aerospace companies PR wet dream: transporting astronauts to the International Space Station. They then proceeded to drop that softball so hard that the thud could probably be heard from Mars.
I don’t know.
This is generally known as “land contract/contract for deed”. People do it all the time. As suggested in another comment, you should consult an attorney. If either you or your mom is hesitant to do that, you should ask yourself what happens to your house and mortgage if (God forbid) your mom were to die? Don’t wait to find out. Get an attorney and make sure that it’s all ironed out in advance.
During WWII the United States government rounded up tens of thousands of people, including many US citizens, and put them in internment camps because they looked sort of similar to the people who bombed pearl harbor. Why? Because fear is a powerful drug and when people are afraid, logic tends to go out the window, if there was any logic to begin with. If you pay attention to conservative rhetoric, you’ll notice that much of it is intended to stoke fear, while inserting themselves as the solution. They do it because it works.
Way out in the Arkansas Delta, in a soybean field 50 miles from anywhere, there is a memorial where one of these internment camps stood. If you aren’t looking for it, you’d probably drive right by it unnoticed. All around the camp there are these little voice boxes that you push a button on and it explains what you’re looking at. The voice providing the narration is none other than George Takei who was held there with his family as a child. Spend a little time at a place like this and it will quickly disabuse you of the notion that America has always rejected fanaticism.
“I’m going to get so much done today.” or “If I clean the house, it’s going to stay that way for more than ten minutes.” are just some of the lies I tell myself to help me stay motivated
Pretty safe to say The Donald covets all kinds of things that aren’t his, especially power, and he has definitely missused the Lord’s name. So we’re at least up to five now. If we can interpret the fact that he has to put his name on everything as being a form of idolatry, that’ll be six.
They do maintain an x86 build. I haven’t used pfSense but I have used OpnSense so that’s that closest thing I have to compare it to. I think the upside and downside to RouterOS/Mikrotik is the same thing: it allows very granular control over almost everything. Maybe to a fault. It’s probably overkill for most home networks.
Set up a VPS. Create a VPN tunnel from you local network to the VPS. Use the VPS as the edge router by opening ports on the VPS firewall and routing incoming traffic on those ports through the VPN tunnel to servers on your local network.
I used to do this to get around CGNAT. I ran RouterOS in a Digital Ocean droplet and setting up a wire guard tunnel between it and my local Mikrotik router.
It will obscure your local WAN IP and give you a static IP but that’s about the only benefit. And you have to be pretty network savvy to configure it correctly.
It does not make you immune to DDoS attacks and is honestly more headache to maintain (albeit just a small headache).
I left Reddit because of their shenanigans. The Tiktok crowd deciding Reddit was cool was what guaranteed I would never go back. Now if anyone asks me if I use social media, I just say “No”.
No. Not that I know of anyway. I actually have a “landline” still, although it’s technically voip. It costs next to nothing, it’s handy in emergencies, and I don’t necessarily want everyone to have my cell number.
We all need someone to look up to. Eventually YOU become the person that people look up to, especially if you have kids. I think about that often and it’s sobering because it’s a huge responsibility.
If those are the right boots, what do you do differently to keep them from leaking?
An ideas guy with all kinds of ideas.
…most of which are complete shit.
Nice to see they’re still chugging the AI Koolaid after completely blundering their test rollout of AI search results.
This is great! Thanks so much for the advice.
That makes me feel better. There was no crown initially. The flue tiles terminated flush with the brick inside the chimney cap. The old cap made cleaning and inspecting the flues difficult. It also had a fair bit of water damage.
What would I use as a base for the new crown?
If you’re not hosting any publicly available services, then no. A reverse proxy would be unnecessary. You can just just set static records in your DNS server that tell it which internal hostname goes with what IP and it will relay that info to any device on your local network that requests it. Even with a Wireguard connection, you can tell it to use the DNS server from your local network.
