  • The lower the grade the faster it rusts. Forgot most people don’t know that. Its rusting because there is iron in steel (duh). It’s rusting quickly because it has low concentration of rust inhibitors like chromium or nickel. Increasing the concentration of these metals makes it rust slower. It also makes it harder to tool into a car body, making it a shifty choice for a car shell.

The article you linked is either uninformed or being misleading about “free iron”. That just means there are no rust inhibitors so they are leaving free energy available on the surface of an iron grain at the surface of the material. This makes it rust quickly where those grains are. There are millions of these grains at the surface where the metal interfaces with air. The iron particles are in the body panel, not on top of it.

  • I have an MS in mechanical engineering focused in materials and I wrote a few papers on 3d printing of stainless tool steels. I’ve read further down the thread and you are completely wrong.

It’s rusting because it’s a low grade stainless. Its low grade because stainless steel work hardens when bent or machined. Lower grades have less issues with work hardening. They made this choice to save on tooling costs I assume.

Work hardening is when you permanently deform a material it gets more brittle. Stainless is an unbelievably stupid choice for a vehicle body because it needs to be formed into complex shapes which require lots of deformation. It’s why SS cars feature mostly large flat panels and also partially why we have been moving towards aluminum body panels.

  • The boots I recommended are fairly squishy. But they are nothing like most running shoes these days. If you are interested in switching to boots I’d recommend going to a store that only sells boots.

Funny thing is I have the opposite problem now. Squishy shoes give me horrible joint and back pain. I think it’s because the force over time is longer and more damaging. I’m not a barefoot advocate but it’s everyone’s own preference.

  • The weird recommendation I have is sort of a boot adjacent shoe. Asolo agent evo are my daily shoe. They last at least a year for me and I tear through salomons in 6 months max. Downside to these shoes for some is they are flat with little padding. For some reason I love them and I recommend trying them on if you can find them.

For actual boots I use when I need safety shoes, Danner Vicious with super feet inserts. I’ve worn them for more than 20 hours with little issue. And they are still waterproof 5 years later. They were close to $300 with the inserts.

I also want to warn you that my recommendation is me specific. Everyone is different and some people need to step on clouds to make it through a few hours on their feet, I’m not like that at all.

  • System integrator or automation integration. It has a few names. My title is currently controls specialist but that also changes constantly. I install, setup, and program PLCs to run any type of plant automation. I also set up HMIs and stock tracking systems. I haven’t done it in a while but interfacing with SAP used to be a big part my job. Now I mostly just program conveyors and configure HMIs so people can see status without being on the floor.

I started this job by having an MS in ME and taking the first job I could get out of college. It was never my intent to have this career path, but now I kind of like it. It’s crazy stressful at times though. Whole production facility can go down for hours if I make mistakes.

  • They are real shokz open run headphones. I’m not trying to shit on people that use them they just seem to suck for me. The extra charge cable also pisses me off.

She has better hearing than I do but when listening to a podcast they are loud enough she can’t hear normal talking volume. Like I can stand next to her and say something and if she doesn’t see me she can’t hear me. It’s bad enough that she told me to buy her the cheap independent ear headphones I use as a gift in the future because she’s annoyed by it.

I never get vertigo and have crazy good balance. I haven’t fallen over in a decade and I ski and mountain bike a lot. I think the headphones vibrate some part of my ear that is part of how I balance.

Edit: thinking about it it’s not vertigo I feel. It’s that I can feel my skull vibrating and it is absolutely awful. I can feel it shaking behind my eyes. So maybe I’m weird and can feel something most people can’t?
