Whoa, I didn’t know Visual Basic is still around. I remember using VB6, many years ago
I don’t really follow X, Bluesky, Instagram, TikTok, etc. so I basically live under a rock. Sometimes I ask dumb questions to try to understand people a little better. Apologies if my questions inadvertently offend anyone. I mean no harm.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•Crows are intelligent birds and learn quickly – even from each other. In Sweden, they are used to collect cigarette butts and bring them to a machine that automatically rewards them with peanuts.
61·9 days agoUnless I missed something, it seems like the crows are doing it voluntarily. Is that not the case?

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do some Americans "feel ashamed" for being American even when it's not their fault?
2·17 days agoAmerican tech companies created algorithms that happen to boost videos and news articles of fringe/extreme occurrences that take place here. The mainstream news networks also prioritize content like that, for the same reason: It’s very profitable. Boring news/content just doesn’t make much money.
People who have never visited the US seem to have a very distorted understanding of what everyday life is like here. We display a pretty embarrassing caricature of our country for the world to see.
And to make things even more embarrassing, we made our government ridiculous, and made our politics become pop culture (yet also very tribal) over the last ~15 years.

2·1 month agoSure! It’s completely solid-state; no fans or other moving parts. The case is designed to dissipate the heat. The CPU is some low-power Intel Pentium. I don’t remember exactly which model.
I ordered a pre-built one from Protectli because I needed it fast, but you can save quite a bit if you prefer to build one. These little motherboards and cases can be found pretty easily online.

5·2 months agoI went with a dedicated mini PC with one of those motherboards that are designed for building a network appliance. It has been running very smoothly for a few years, and I just log in occasionally to run system updates.
I want my network and Internet connection to continue working, regardless of my tinkering with home server stuff.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Fellow 'Fediversers,' what keeps you hanging on here despite the "FV" being a work-in-progress, with all its built-in, various bumps & difficulties to experience along the way?

8·2 months agohome server
I acknowledge that this is a silly question, but what does a Windows home server do? I’m sure there are many possibilities, but most of my server experience has been Linux-based, so I’m just curious.
If I were to run Windows on my home server, I’d probably just end up running a lot of services in WSL out of habit 😆

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•During the lead up to the Holocaust did the N... regime just kidnap people who they even thought were Jews? Kind of like ICE is doing to citizens today?
291·2 months agoI’m genuinely curious: Why censor the word “Nazi”?

5·2 months agowe only have a bread machine now, no shops of any kind.
“We” meaning your village? Your village no longer has shops, but somehow shares a bread machine? Or am I totally misunderstanding this?

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why are people using the "þ" character?English
41·2 months agoĐere’s no escaping us, broðer.
Here’s
gemma3:12b-it-qat, the tiniest LLM I run on my home server.
Though, any LLM is overkill for this, of course. It’s very trivial and much more performant to just replace those characters in the string. Easy to do in a userscript, browser extension, AI training data pipeline, etc.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why are people using the "þ" character?
7·2 months agoIt wouldn’t surprise me if the thorns get filtered/corrected in the pipeline before even being used as training data — maybe even by another LLM.
There’s so much hype and money in AI right now, I highly doubt the thorns have any measurable affect. It’s such a trivial problem to solve.

I haven’t used ZFS in like a decade, but would strongly consider going back to it if it can do that now.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a subject you (think) you know more about than the average Lemmy user?
2·2 months agoPersonally, it never interested me very much, so I couldn’t tell you much about it on a technical level. I remember thinking the decocker is kinda cool though lol.
From the perspective of an FFL employee though: Those pretty much sold themselves. They’re one of those guns that people usually already know about when they show up to buy one. They’ve done their research, maybe already tried shooting one, and they’re excited to finally buy one of their own. IIRC, a decent portion of them tend to have military or police background.
Those were among my favorite kinds of customers. I was usually able to learn some interesting things from them about the particular gun they’re buying.
I wish I could recall more about the USP aside from the neat decocker, but I’ve been out of the business for like 7 years.
Edit: I also remember that the .45 is an extra chonky boi.
I just realized something: When I search for something in Lemmy and get zero results, I sometimes go to Reddit and search there.
It would probably be better to make a new post in Lemmy about the thing I’m searching for. It would add content to Lemmy, and the content would be newer and fresher than the Reddit results that are sometimes 10+ years old.
