  • I was raped and if I had a gun with me in a purse or bag I wouldn’t have been raped. I did own a gun at home for protection but didn’t keep it with me because of concealed carry laws, which is why I got raped. So yeah, rape does work like that, unfortunately. I’m not against free health care and wish everyone had universal health care.

Part of my calculation when being held down and deciding whether or not to fight back was whether I would get killed if I really fought back intensely. I tried pushing him off but he weighted a lot. I had initially tried to reason with him, but reasoning your way out of being raped apparently doesn’t work. The easiest way to fight back in the situation I was in would have been to have pressed my thumbs into his eyeballs and I thought if I did that, I might be able to get away, but I also might end up strangled to death. So I didn’t do that.

With something like mace or a taser, if I had that, it would have helped, but mace is a bit hard to aim in the dark. With both a taser and mace, yes, they may have worked, but they may not have. I really think if I had merely injured him, he would have killed me after.

It would have been much better had there been a gun with me.

Guns give ordinary people the autonomy to fight back against extreme brutality. It’s unfortunate the issue has become polarized. All people should be able to own guns, all people should have universal health care, and all people should have the right to peacefully die if they want. Many of the “crazed” people in the US likely would have chosen a peaceful state-approved suicide or free emotional health service or both when their conditions deteriorated if the laws were different, and linking seeking care to forever having restricted rights (such as the ability to fly a plane or own a gun) is why so many men don’t seek mental health support. Idiot liberals think if they buy more ads publicizing the importance of “mental health awareness” that men will suddenly go get help despite the restricted rights that always come with any diagnosis, which is always needed for insurance purposes. Countries that don’t have an armed citizen are opening themselves up to brutal extreme tyranny, including dictators and oligopoly rule using the latest tech and AI, and only the stupid and naive don’t see the risk or realize that in some countries it may already be here. The solution is more guns. For everyone.

  • i’m not sure the number of dicks that a person needs to suck to no longer be in the right wing camp, but i am way past whatever number that is

you’re completely wrong. the solution isn’t fewer guns, it’s many MORE guns. if teachers all had guns, none of these school shootings would happen

the problem is that in the US mental health is not free and mental health evaluations are tied to people being deemed second-class citizens.

these laws that are designed to remove guns from crazy people mostly result in 18 and 19 year olds who are at higher risk of going crazy specifically avoiding mental health help so they aren’t permanently denied rights and become second-class citizens, and they are already likely to avoid mental health help as a result of cost factors

shockingly, many teenagers with mental health problems don’t have just bags of money lying around to pay for extremely expensive professionals while in a highly stratified society with extremely unequal wealth distribution.

you and your ilk create bizarre incentives for people to not get mental health help, encourage schools to be completely gun free, and then are pikuchu-level-shocked when some crazed 19 year old doesn’t get mental health help and then goes to a school in the USA and kills children

YOU are saying all the left wing talking points, and they may sound nice in a country that has a safety net, and there may be so-called data to support these theories that if you disarm everyone then everything is better, but the reality is if you disarm everyone, you set the stage for a new white nationalist dictator to decimate the USA without providing that much additional safety that couldn’t be accomplished in other ways

Instead of complaining about too many guns, you should be advocating for free guns for teachers and making health care universal and disentangled from other aspects of civic life

but it’s SO much easier to call me a right wing maniac right? And it’s SO much easier to push ideas that would never work in the US and are not only politically infeasible but would also be disastrous… At least everyone will think you are smart for parroting all the liberal talking points.

  • I suppose you are right, but I just hate it

I want to live in a world where I can say “look, it’s a pack of transgenders” and point to a group of trans people like it’s exciting and cool, i just think, why can’t transgender people be seen as so cool and interesting and fun that this doesn’t matter?

    can’t tonality matter?

there’s this 7 foot tall transgender black woman that shops in the same store as me and i never talk to her and always want to take photos of her because she’s interesting to look at. but i never say anything. she’s probably not 7 feet tall. she looks 7 feet tall. she seems so cool. i’ve never said anything to her because i don’t know if she’d want to talk to me. i’m just a weird introvert who likes linux

i feel like it’s so easy to be offensive in this world that tone and context should matter more, but at the same time, you’re not actually putting me on blast or seeming that offended. im just being inflexible and hate being wrong. and we live in a world with a lot of religious shitheads who haven’t died out yet and so i don’t want to seem like one of those people i guess. also, it’s not called Poh Key Man? How do you say it then? alright, i’ll try to stop saying the term in the republican way: trans people

    did i do it right?

  • You are confusing actual results with people being on the right side of a conflict.

The NRA, even if it is an incompetent worthless organization as you suggest, at least is trying to stop the slippery slope towards a society of people who kneel to the wishes of the new king.

The corruption of police does not mean an excuse to de-arm the populace so they can be lose their freedoms to authoritarianism and the NRA supporting guns in every context, even ones that seemingly are awful, doesn’t mean that they are awful. Perhaps the NRA supports cops doing awful things because they don’t want to lose a large pillar of support.

Instead of criticizing the very people who are preventing society from crumbling into a new technocratic kingship, what about thanking them? What about saying “thanks NRA for encouraging the world to be filled with guns?”

Only those ignorant of history (and to be clear, I am not implying this is you, I am explicitly saying this is you) are against the NRA and it’s wish to prevent the world from going to pre-democratic times in which only the king decided who should have arms.

  • I sort of understand your perspective.

I also hate cultural conservatives enough that if they want to make homosexual or transgenders pejorative, I want to use those words with positive connotations. I am aware of the negative connotations of certain words about the LGBT community (and other words that have turned pejorative that originally weren’t) and am really against changing the words society uses because a word that denotes something starts to have a connotation because of idiots. The problem with changing to a different phrase is the new phrase is going to eventually get the same connotations by the same idiots.

As someone who has literally been fucked over by members of the transgender community more than once, why do I have to let religious right-wing republicans make words into bad things or apologize for using words in a way that is literal?

I feel like instead of objecting to nuances of dog whistle language, we need to be more direct in calling out delusional religious fuckwads for their absence of logic and advocate to find ways to inflict severe economic pain and other types of societally-permissable pain on them instead of trying to reach understanding or change people’s views. Eventually, since more people have access to knowledge through the Internet, the religious generations of yore will die and most new generations will stop believing religious bullshit since they have access to actual information that isn’t total garbage.

  • this is by design

they allow small amounts of poison in food, then explicitly tell people it’s poison through the media

there are articles about how people use energy drinks mysteriously die sooner while the ingredients iinclude B-12 in a form bonded to cyanide

there are too many people on the planet, it’s causing global warming, and we need to find any way possible to reduce the population so we are less likely to all die

this is a very fair way of doing it. cigarettes will kill you, don’t smoke them, available in stores everywhere. YOLO, keep drinking until you get liver failure. why not have some delicious highly processed fake food with gut bacteria killing preservatives that will fuck your stomach microbiome? all of the poisons take years to kill you because frogs boiled slowly don’t jump out of the pot

it’s awful but at least fair. we all get to “choose” and I put that in quotes because free will doesn’t exist. I say this as someone who consumes poison and can’t entirely stop despite knowing the consequences.

a good rule of thumb: if it’s processed, it’s poison, if it won’t rot within a week unrefrigerated, it’s poison, if you feel very high and happy immediately following consuming it, it’s poison

it’s hard because the right thing to do is drink water and eat vegetables and legumes and fresh things… but it’s hard because they have made food in a way in which addictive drugs are integrated into the food, and it’s not called that

i know that coffee is for stupid people, but i drink it anyway because im addicted. i end up in pain and miserable and just say “fuck it” and it makes my health worse.

  • this epitomizes all Republicans

they are just a panoply of mean, nasty people who are either religiously deluded into ignorance or avariciously salivating over class oppression or some combination thereof

gaslighting a colleague is no different than what all republicans do to transgenders every single day. i hope they all live long enough for tribunals to round these republicans up and try them for their crimes against transgenders after the constitution is changed to allow ex post facto laws for the limited purpose of fucking these assholes over for all the shit they are doing now to the trans community. the same hate they have towards transgenders we should all have towards these shitheads and ultimately, we the people write the laws and have a living constitution and should fuck these people over as hard as possible in the most lawful way possible about 20 years from now when the religious senior citizens who protect them with their religious delusions die off.

the only beneficent quality of republicans is supporting the NRA, which really should be a non-partisan issue since citizens need to be armed in case of tyranny

in the french revolution, moronic greedy oppressors were efficiently removed from power after the lower classes were pushed more and more into misery. luckily, unlike in france back then, we can vote greedy vile idiots out of office

unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait for the deluded religious morons to naturally reduce in numbers by dying off to get rid of these fucks, since older people are more religious and easily deceived into voting for terrible politicians

  • Thanks for posting this.

I read the article you posted also.

I think the article is likely entirely true. One of the difficulties I have, as a regular reader not highly educated in Asian politics and history, is that I know Western governments do lie in order to protect their interests. Not only that, many of their rules allow them to lie. There are gag orders, and levels of secret classifications, and ps-ops and we all know that exists.

I am pro free speech and pro protest rights. I think since China does not allow free speech it’s likely the entire post is completely true. I really wish I could believe it completely. One thing that many Western pro-free speech countries don’t understand is that lying frequently, even if it’s sanctioned by the government and justified somehow, means they lose moral credibility with the truth of anything they say. Is it the truth this time… or is this one of the lies?

I still want to live in a world of free speech and women and LGBT people having rights and Western governments seem to be the best at doing this, but I just wish I could believe the article you linked without any doubt at all.

If it’s really that bad on lemmy.ml, couldn’t all the communities be replicated? I use lemmy.world and don’t know if there’s an option for me to block lemmy.ml unless I change federations. The plight of the poor and concentration of wealth among the upper classes has become very bad, and environmental problems will likely kill us all within 300 years (capitalism and democracy have environmentally failed) but I don’t want to be a part of something in which mere discussion of different views results in banning and deletion of comments, even if I have very pro-poor people views.

  • I don’t know if this is right.

Let’s look at global warming and environmental pollution.

I am of the belief that based on the mathematical trends, the bulk of us are all going to die through total environmental collapse within 300 years. If you have a petri dish and there’s bacteria in it, and you give it unlimited nutrients (similar how today’s society uses oil to produce things far beyond what the environment would normally allow), eventually there is bacterial colony collapse due to pollution. If you look at the trends, they are very bad, and because most people don’t understand how math works and don’t really believe in science, or are struggling too much to care, and because many people believe in religions that promise an afterlife and suggest a deity or deities would not allow destruction of the earth due to poor resource management, there’s not really a way to stop this trend. One climate scientist set himself on fire to try to warn people about what is happening. It made the papers, for 1 day, and then people went back to not caring.

I like the idea of what you are saying, but everything is going to end someday, right? Why should this person throw their life away on some cause when they don’t believe in it, to spend their life changing something that may not be changeable?

People believe in religion. And people are stupid. You can’t deprogram everyone, there’s too many religious idiots. And therefore we’re all going to die because people believe in fairy tales and not environmental science.

So that being said, does political activism even make sense? If the lemmings are all about to fall off the cliff, do you try to stop them? Do you try to convince them as they are falling off the cliff? What if you are tied up and they are carrying you off the cliff with them? Do you keep trying to reason with them? At what point do you just take a deep breath and enjoy the view? (I know lemmings don’t really do this.)

Even if you think the highly intelligent people of the world should band together to try to stop the madness of the others who can’t understand science and logic, how would it be possible? Reasoning with them doesn’t work, trying to impact politics doesn’t work because either capitalists are greedily exploiting people and therefore want to hold political power or communists are too obsessed with controlling people and let the environment become destroyed as a result, or the government is controlled by religious zealots in which the goal is relieving the existential anxiety of many people through made up fairy tales. There’s not really a way to stop this train, of environmental catastrophe. Look at the graphs, study how the oceans work, look at how pollution is exponentially increasing. Small changes will not improve things. You also have seemingly “smart” people who are often either psychopathic or autistic advocating for a greater population and saying global warming is a scam and some of them are high profile people and often their beliefs are either rooted in nihilism, selfishness, or the belief that technological progress will somehow be some sort of deus ex machina savior that will swoop down and change exponential trends and this confuses the stupid religious people that make up the bulk of society who think that if high profile smart people don’t believe in global warming, then everything is fine. It’s not actually just global warming, it’s massive amounts of pollution, all sorts of different kinds, massive amounts of environmental destruction, all sorts of kinds. And so while we’re debating abortion rights and pronouns and the minutia of LGBT and religious intersectionality, the exponential trends do not care and keep on exponenting.

So yeah, I think what you’re posting is a noble idea. But… it may not matter. Unless a large part of the population dies, without destroying the environment in the process, this planet ain’t going to be that habitable for that much longer, and even with a huge reduction in population it’s probably too late. When bacterial colonies collapse, it isn’t slow and gradual… everything is fine… everything is fine… then WHAM!!! a huge sudden decline and barely any bacteria are able to survive. It’s possible I’m reading all the data wrong, and everything will be fine. I don’t know though, it doesn’t look good to me. The biggest wild card seems like it’s the oceans and what happens to the planet when the oceans fundamentally change due to chemical properties being changes in aggregate and whether tipping points will suddenly result in changes wildly increasing even faster. People don’t really listen to good smart scientist that much when there’s no profit motive to listen. That guy who set himself on fire to try to warn people really tried, he was really trying to warn people. And it did nothing. I think the only way this planet ends up surviving without becoming nearly uninhabitable is if a worse pandemic shows up and eliminates over 2/3rd of people. That will probably end up happening, either accidentally or intentionally by someone or a government that can see the data and ends up making the hard ugly decision.

I like your post, but I like the post too about just enjoying life as much as you can. This conflict isn’t minutia of course and perhaps it’s worth fighting for, but against the backdrop of looming environmental catastrophe and scientific illiteracy, combined with a planet literally primarily controlled by people who believe in religion, which is all balderdash, is there really a reason to keep trying to change society? You can’t reason with math, or have optimism and a dialogue with math. It’s just math.

It’s a lot like how Ozempic has changed people’s perception of obesity. It used to all be about will power and diets and exercise. Even Oprah was saying you could change things. And then Ozempic came along, and we all realized will power only did so much, and a lot of it was just math and brain chemistry and free will was perhaps an illusion when it came to obesity. It’s the same with religion and irrationality and autistic CEO millionaires who say everything is fine, as long as we leave the planet before it collapses, and it’s the same with politicians and corporate industry groups that try to make policy favorable to their bottom line: the disgusting aspects of humanity that are dooming us are a part of nature too. Religion is nature, ozempic is nature, war is nature. We have no control and never did. It doesn’t mean that “giving up” is always rational.

However, look at the data. It’s too late. We’re too late. The change already had to happen. And it didn’t. Now we wait to all die. Perhaps a worse pandemic will save what’s left of the planet. I don’t claim to be right about any of this. Listen to the guy who set himself on fire, not me. He was pretty sure.
