Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Fellow 'Fediversers,' what keeps you hanging on here despite the "FV" being a work-in-progress, with all its built-in, various bumps & difficulties to experience along the way?
3·2 months agoI self host every fediverse thing I can and when I open it I know its mine and I can glance over at the machine running it all and see where it all is and that feels good enough to deal with whatever comes up. That said, these days its all pretty easy.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why can't we have a static vintage web?
4·3 months agoNo worries it wasn’t an attack on you or your totally fair question. I’m no where near knowledgeable enough to give any valid responses to the inquiry, I just thought I’d share why I feel like I (we?) need it. I wanted to do X for my community and I was told I need Y to do it, thus for me for this use case its necessary. That’s all I was sayin.

14·3 months agoI run a website where my community and I all contribute to a free shared database that houses settings for machines we can use. I don’t know how I’d really do that without managing every single submission manually. I think that like all things there’s a way to use js responsibly.

8·3 months agoIdk I started using organicmaps (comaps now) long long ago. I guess I don’t have a great fundamental understanding of search. Are not most other search engines just hopping on the back of google search engines? I honestly don’t know. Its not an area I’ve spent a lot of time learning about - or maybe I’m just a backwards dude haha.

51·3 months agoSomeone recommended Kagi in another thread yesterday and that night I finally became 100% google free. Search was the last big hurdle. I was literally the biggest google fanboy. I had google home devices, google wifi, I wanted all their devices, had all their services, everything was set up and integrated. De-googling was fucking hard but I did it and I’m super proud and I’ve learned so much about how tech works setting up my replacement services and devices. Fuck you Google.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Spare mini PCs? What would you do with them?English
1·3 months agoI’ve been curious about running a hardware firewall/router, I’ve seen it discussed but don’t know much about it. I also hear a lot of people swear by their proxmox setups but I am a complete noob there so again more research would be required. What I’ve heard about running a proxmox setup has looked overwhelming at a glance.

1·3 months agolol I haven’t heard the “RAID is not a backup” before but it’s true I’ll have to see how I would manage that and what data would be a good candidate for this implementation.

2·3 months agoI have a ton of handhelds I usually use for this purpose and a pretty powerful workstation I use to run heavier games but I’ve thought about like a tv box setup for doing such activities in the living room. Could be fun.

2·3 months agoThanks I have a dark corner or two, this sounds like an interesting idea.

Despite our complete homelab setup my wife still pays for a few streaming services. Couldn’t be more than $45. Still to much. Have you guys heard Linux unplugged’s IPTV episode they just published? Shit is wild.
