So many…

• loading (from cassette!) and playing Adventure on a PET 4008. It was breathtaking! The first truly immersive gaming experience.
• Wolf 3D on my first x86 machine. I hooked up the modem from my old Atari 400, and went looking for shareware. I had no idea what I was in for.
• DOOM! I spent all bloody day trying to download the two shareware floppy images on the University campus, and a few hours tweaking the boot disk to get it running. Then the game started, and I played until I had to go to work the next morning.
• Crying at the end of Grim Fandango. I play the game through every year or so, and my eyes still water up at the end.
• Dark Age of Camelot - my first MMORPG. Hundreds of people in guilds and armies, organizing in real-time. It was fantastic. (until the script kiddies took over)

Even better, don’t use Twitter at all and don’t support its insane fascist asshole billionaire owner.

Seriously, why even continue talk8ng about twitter? Let it die.

I’d qualify that as for-profit mandatory insurance.

Canpt get a mortgage without home insurance. Canpt drive a vehicle without at least liability. Those rates should be strictly government regulated to be sustainable and non-profit.

But if you want to insure your collection if priceless Whitworth wrenches, well maybe I care a bit (Just a bit!) less about insurance gouging.

Egg Inc is angrowth game that’s silly and fun. Squad Alpha is a great casual shooter, and all ads are voluntary. (Note, this is NOT Alpha Squad.)

Unlike most, I survived the API garbage because I primarily used the desktop site.

But the subsequent response and then the removal of the “don’t sell my personal info” option was clearly spez saying the quiet part out loud. Asshole doesn’t deserve to get richer off of my effort.

I was active - and I mean ACTIVE - on reddit for well over a decade. When the API fiasco happened, I deleted my mobile apps, and stuck to desktop. When ‘opt out of selling your data’ became impossible, I logged out for good.

Lemmy is both better and worse than reddit ever was. It will likely never reach the same activity level, but will also not reach the same toxicity.

Morrowind was bundled with a video card I got, and thought I’d at least try it. I had no idea what it was or how it worked, and I fell headfirst into it. WEEKS thrown at it, and I never got bored.

After that, Oblivion was a letdown for me and I didn’t get very far into it. Skyrim was great fun, but the lore was clearly secondary. (I eventually went back to Oblivion and found it a better story than Skyrim, but Morrowind is still the best.)

I think I’d disagree with this.

For a while, there was a sense among the robber baron class that loyalty to employees would pay off with loyalty returned. Consider industrialists building towns for their employees and families, complete with schools and arenas.

Regardless of how cynical the reasoning may have been, the result was a degree of mutual loyalty and job security.

‘Job security’ has been a myth for more than half a century. A career for mostnpeople is nothing more than a job that you’re enmeshed in, and can’t easily leave if you want to.

I fought with Broadcom’s shitty website for hours, but finally have Workstation Pro, in which I will test my workflows in Linux.

Games and Lightroom will be a challenge, but I’m going to avoid Win11 at all costs.
