Technology@beehaw.org•Nick Clegg says asking artists for use permission would ‘kill’ the AI industryEnglish
19·7 months agoPerhaps the government should collect money from the AI companies — they could call it something simple, like “taxes” — and distribute the money to anyone who had ever written something that made its way to the internet (since we can reasonably assume that everything posted online has now been sucked in to the slop machines)

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that habeas corpus has its roots in the Magna carta, from the 13th century.English
4·7 months agoBut that’s what I’m saying - From a practical perspective we’ve learned that it is essentially impossible to prosecute – let alone convict – a sitting president. They have de facto immunity, even if it’s not technically de jure.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•When talking to yourself, do you use the pronoun 'I' or 'you'?English
4·7 months ago“One” for me as well. No need to be so informal just because it’s all in my head.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that habeas corpus has its roots in the Magna carta, from the 13th century.English
710·7 months agoDidn’t the Supreme Court last year basically decide that the President can do anything without restriction if it’s to execute his duties? Until someone does something about that I don’t understand the purpose of articles like this other than to be rage bait.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Does an Influx of Former Reddit Users create a Shift in Athmosphere?English
12·7 months agoI’d be willing to bet that there’s a direct relationship between not just the size of an online community and its overall “civility” level, but also its age. I’ve seen threads in chat rooms of 8 normally good-natured folks get Godwin’d just because they continued on for long enough that one topic turned heated. With Lemmy we’re seeing a natural increase in both.
I joined about 3 years ago and there was much, much less content and conversation, which definitely made me try to be more polite as possible to the few who posted (if only because it’d be the same folks over and over again and I didn’t want to discourage them from participating). Now that’s less of a concern, so while I still try to be mindful of my posts and comments, it’s to much less of a degree than before.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's a piece of esoteric knowledge you have?English
29·7 months ago😂 Ok so the “regularly” in my post is doing a bit of lifting. Not too much tho (anchovy is the only other one you could possibly consider frequently used, unless you have a particularly bizarre vocabulary).

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's a piece of esoteric knowledge you have?English
50·7 months ago“Bizarre” is the only word from the Basque language that is regularly used in the English language
(Can’t wait to be proven wrong in 5… 4… 3…)
The two things I always tell my type-A kids:
- There is no “on time” or “on schedule”, and
- You can’t min/max your way through life
Both are great ways to stress/burn yourself out.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•If you could travel to any world while you were sleeping, which would you choose?English
2·8 months agoIt doesn’t come up much except to underscore that in The Culture there is no “normal” with regard to sex or gender because people can be whatever they want and can change on a whim. so without a base gender/sex you can’t have a queer gender/sex.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Does Santa exist in an alternate universe somewhere?English
81·8 months agoI believe in the Quantum ClausTM theory - there’s just one guy, and he just makes one present for just one kid (on the nice list, which has at most just one name). But on Christmas Eve he exists in a superposition of states at every child’s house with every possible gift.
Thanks for the reminder!

Fried chick peas (I use cans since they’re more convenient, but even cheaper dried beans are fine too but you have to soak for 24h and then boil them first). But either way, seriously cheap, loaded with protein and fiber, and delicious:
Rinse beans and dump into a large dry pan on high heat. Move them around until they have mostly dried up and just barely start sticking to the pan. Then add oil - just once or twice around the pan is plenty - and some salt. Then let them fry in that little bit of oil. Move them with a spoon every so often to keep from sticking too much.
After about 15 min you have these golden brown crunchy and slightly salty little things. They’re great, and go with everything as a side dish.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•What is your favorite Fediverse specific creators?English
11·8 months ago@[email protected] posts fantastic, fediverse-only comics to [email protected]. They can be super weird and will admittedly not be for everyone, but hey isn’t that why we’re all here in the first place?

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•The fact that even 3D games are old now blows my mind on a regular basis.English
23·8 months agoThe thing is, 5 years before that games did look like triangle-boobed-Lara-Croft. There was just an enormous wave of tech progress in the 3D accelerator world from the late 90s to mid aughts

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there any way to bring back a section of the Internet to those of us who want it to stay in the 2003-2010 and before era?English
44·8 months agoActivityPub and the fediverse were started specifically to deal with the kind of centralization that has lead to the shit state of the Internet today, so I’d say the fact that you’ve made it here means you’ve kinda found what you’re looking for already. Find and read/write WriteFreely/Ghost/Plume blogs (and shitposts) instead of Substack or Medium, use Lemmy for threaded conversations (and shitposts) instead of Reddit, and Mastodon for microblogs (and shitposts) instead of Twitter. Peertube is not a drop-in replacement for Youtube, but also 90% of the new content on Youtube is garbage today anyway, and there’s nothing stopping you from browsing older videos (with Freetube or similar to block a good portion of Youtube’s enshittified UI).
Plus if you do stick to these off-the-beaten-path alternatives, it’s still a fun time to be a content creator since you’re not focused on maximizing engagement or monetization – which is the true source of the godawful state of the Internet today.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What cover song just takes you to Universe B compared to the original?English
4·8 months agoYea, that song+video might be the origin of the phrase “goes hard”.

Was just talking with a coworker about how with the rise of server-side rendering we’re finally technologically back to Web 1.0
