I don’t think you’d have prostitution in a currencyless society. They wouldn’t be prostitutes at that point.

When I think about what I would do if I suddenly found myself transported to another world, the last thing I would be doing is looking for a job as a mercenary. As stupid as a lot of the plot is, I really like Striving for a Luxury Liner simply because the MC recognizes that he’s not cut out to be an adventurer and becomes a merchant instead.

The only isekai I’ve read that properly utilized the isekai genre was Release that Witch since the MC’s “cheat” is his knowledge of mechanical engineering. He kicks off his own little industrial revolution to defend his territory.

My main critique of the genre is how lazy it’s done. There’s nothing wrong with having the MC reincarnated, transported, or made overpowered. One Punch Man has a massively overpowered MC but it’s still really good. The problem is that they’re all low effort cookie cutter stories that are just checking items off a list.

They’re also fairly unrealistic. “Gasp…is this that isekai thing I’ve been reading about? I guess I’ll go join the Adventurer Guild and get a super dangerous job killing monsters despite the fact that I’ve never been in a dangerous situation before.”

There’s no way all these random people will just calmly accept finding themselves in another world with no freaking out or depression setting in first.

I’ve never understood why people get so upset when he does this. I like it when someone points out the actual physics behind something that you see in films and what was done right and wrong.

Learning that something in a movie isn’t scientifically accurate doesn’t ruin the movie for me. I already figured it wouldn’t be entirely correct and it doesn’t have to be correct (unless it’s supposed to be educational).

I’ll sometimes tag Lemmy communities in my mastodon posts. The only thing I dislike about it is how Lemmy displays tags in the post title. There’s got to be some way to fix it so it’s not so off-putting.

Another use I haven’t seen mentioned is that it’s good when you only have a single monitor. You can easily use shortcut keys to flip between the desktops. I could have my remote connection to another computer in one desktop and my local stuff in another and easily switch between the two.

I just created an account there and when it came time to add books, a whole bunch of books I read didn’t even show up. I’ll have to look more into it when I have more time.

I would consider squatting a form of sitting not standing but if that’s what people mean then it at least makes more sense to me.

This question pops up every now and then on social media and it always blows my mind that there are people who wipe standing up. I just don’t understand the logistics of it and it seems like it would make things more difficult.

Twitter should be one of the easiest social media platforms to leave. Mastodon seems every bit as good as Twitter with the lack of users being it’s only real flaw.

The microblog style seems to work the best with federation as well since you’re following people.

However, I’m quite concerned about firearms being used for their primary purpose: killing people.

That’s where you’re sort of wrong. Their advertised, primary purpose is self defense or hunting depending on the weapon both of which are legal actions. Deliberately using a weapon to commit murder outside of these intended purposes is a misuse of the weapon no different than deliberately using any other item outside of its intended purpose to commit crime.

Do you have to take your posts with you? I’ve seen people mention this before but I don’t understand why that’s such a big deal. I do agree about the communities though and feel that there needs to be an easy way to export your subscriptions so they can be imported on another account.

That was my thought as well. A single user instance with no local communities would only be storing posts from communities that one user subscribes to. Assuming the person subscribes to only what they want to see, that will be all they get (and any risks that come from storing information from those communities).

In a hypothetical situation where there are only single-user instances and community instances (instances that function as the source of communities), the only ones taking on risk would be the individual users subscribed to a community and owners of the instance hosting the community. There wouldn’t be a need for an admin to make decisions to protect themselves that affect other users.

Honestly, I feel like self-hosting a single user instance is the ideal way to use the Fediverse. It gives you full control over what you see. However, that would require self hosting to become so simple anyone can do it.

Reading all these comments it’s clear that a lot of people have unrealistic ideas regarding what Lemmy and the Fediverse are supposed to be (or maybe it’s me with weird ideas).

The Fediverse is just a bunch of apps that can all communicate with each other through a shared protocol. There is no requirement for them to be free speech platforms or host everything. The whole purpose of defederation supports the idea that instances are free to associate or disassociate with whichever instances they want. Furthermore, nearly every guide I read on joining Lemmy state that you should choose instances to join based on shared ideals/beliefs.

For everyone saying “I’m leaving lemmy.world” I say “Good. That’s what you’re supposed to do.” When the instance you join no longer aligns with what you want, you go to another instance and then you’ll be back to viewing all the communities you want to see. That is what the Fediverse is all about and how it’s designed.

They did screw it up completely and needed to be saved though so that part was accurate.
