  • She’s right: she lives with a dumbass.

I’ve never understood this “old people are vulnerable” thing (not to mention that 69 ain’t that old): even if the scam is really good, at some point the mark is asked to make a large amount of money flow out of their bank account: anybody with the good sense the good lord gave to donkeys would have alarm bells ringing loudly between their ears. Everybody I’ve met in my life reacts like that.

I might understand if the scanner impersonates a close family member really well - although if one of my children started asking me large sums of money, I would get suspicious because… well, they just don’t. But Elon Musk? That guy ain’t a victim, he’s a moron.

  • Reddit, like Facebook, has the advantage of inertia: most people are on Reddit, so other people patronize Reddit, making Reddit even larger. And just like Facebook, it takes something particularly egregious from Reddit to get enough people to walk out at the same time. And you’re correct: Reddit has learned to slow-boil the frogs to avoid this.

But - maybe I’m naive - I’m banking of the Fediverse offering consistently better quality and less drama than Reddit to slowly attract people who want something better, and I’m trying to do my part to increase the S/N ratio on here.

  • I think it’s waiting for some new event that will drive a lot of people away from Reddit again to achieve critical mass and finally outgrow Reddit.

In the meantime, I’m trying to keep my little corner of Lemmy alive - my dinky little special-interest communities - so that those who don’t want to partake in the big Reddit equivalents know they have alternatives on here that are not stale.

  • I suspect a lot of people use Facebook because they’ve always used Facebook - mostly older folks at this point - and a lot of the younger folks go there because their favorite association / football club / local restaurant / library are there too.

Meaning Facebook’s success today is mostly inertia: there’s no way any open-source replacement would pull a critical-enough mass of people away from Facebook to fight the inertia and enjoy any meaningful success. I’m pretty sure open-source developers know this and chose something fancier and more exciting to spend their time on.

Creating a Facebook replacement would be about as exciting as creating a Visual Basic replacement: millions of people still use VB, but nobody wants to touch a dying technology.
