I wouldn’t, I have broken up with girls over this. But that didn’t mean we couldn’t have some fun.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Reading is powerfully and subtley consciousness-altering. For good and bad.
7·14 days ago“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” - G.R.R. Martin (stated by Jojen Reed in A Dance with Dragons).

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•It is theoretically possible to constantly travel so that it is perpetually daytime wherever you are
3·14 days agoI remember reading somewhere you can do this with cruises. When you are on the border UMT -11 and -12, you can have 2 and that leaves you 22 hours to travel to the border of +11 and +12. You might even squeeze an extra celebration out.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are the best/your favorite versions of classic Christmas tunes and why? Interested in both classical pieces, and vocal songs.
1·1 month ago“First Noel” is an album by Ibrahim Maalouf that has some great jazz versions of well known Christmas music.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Can anyone help me find a full recording of The Latvian National Opera production of Peer Gynt?
3·1 month agoMaking a top comment for this. I have found a recording on medici.tv from April 2025 (same choreography): https://www.medici.tv/en/ballets/edward-clug-peer-gynt-grieg-la-scala
It’s a subscription service, but if you really want to watch it, it’s worth it (and you can cancel after a month anyway)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Can anyone help me find a full recording of The Latvian National Opera production of Peer Gynt?
6·1 month agoI want to watch this as well, but can’t find anything either. I sent a mail to the opera house asking how I can get a recording.
Edit: got a reply. They don’t have the recording and told me to contact the choreographer as he apparently owns the rights. Will try to do so later today (at work now)
Update 2: Found the instagram of the choreographer (Edward Clug) and sent him a message
Update 3: After checking his instagram a bit further, it turns out that there still are performances now and then (averaging at 1 per year, last one was in April). This led me to some more internet searching and I found where you can watch the most recent one (at La Scala in Milan): https://www.medici.tv/en/ballets/edward-clug-peer-gynt-grieg-la-scala
Last update: he blocked me without responding. But hey, I found it so I still call it a win.

Technology@beehaw.org•Internet Archive’s legal fights are over, but its founder mourns what was lost
12·2 months agoPreserving is important, sure. But if the settlement required them to delete it and they keep an offline backup and this ever gets out, the settlement is voided and it opens up a world of hurt for them.
This is not a debate about the merits of preservation but about legal repercussions for the Internet Archive.

Technology@beehaw.org•Pornhub says UK visitors down 77% since age checks came in
3·3 months agoI’m glad to hear this. Some weeks ago I was pondering how to do age checks anonymously and this was pretty much the idea I came up with. It just makes a lot more sense because it does what you want without revealing anything private.
Edit: had a brain fart and wrote unanimously instead of anonymously

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Can’t pay, won’t pay: impoverished streaming services are driving viewers back to piracyEnglish
17·5 months agoI know several people who watch everything on some iptv website for free. It’s one of those that bombard you with a dozen popup ads and ad overlays. It doesn’t require any technical knowledge to (eventually) get it to play and you can watch what you want to. 96% seems a bit high, but it is really common. Most people aren’t as tech savvy as the average lemmy user.
I’m kind of with your family on this one, but if you are going through with it I would just verify with the doctor performing the procedure whether it can be reversed in case you change your mind later on.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do you reconcile staying sane while keeping yourself up-to-date with the news?
1·6 months agoOk, sure. I do want to point out that I simply answered the question. I don’t deny my state of luxury yet also don’t feel that this bout of whataboutism is entirely warranted.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do you reconcile staying sane while keeping yourself up-to-date with the news?
31·6 months agoBy looking at it from a larger perspective. You can always get worked up about things but if you zoom out, you see that most of it is just a temporary trend. Some things trend well, some trend poorly, but these tend to be blips in the span of a lifetime.
Especially when comparing with the past you will see that things really aren’t all that bad in general.
A friend of mine is also left handed and I only found out when we started a game of darts and he switched hands. Under communism writing with the left hand was not allowed for some reason.
