I know this is just anecdotal, but I have literally not seen a single mention of Lemmy anywhere online or in the news in the last 3 months, including on Reddit. “Build it and they will come” only gets you so far…

The only real solution is to use rockets to nudge the Earth into a slightly faster orbit so it can be an even 365.

I still have the community I moderate ([email protected]) set to mod posts only, because I’m the only mod and don’t want to risk someone posting something bad while I’m not on Lemmy. We really need an approved user feature like Reddit so that vetted community members can also make posts in communities where “anyone can post” isn’t a good option.

BTW subscriber growth is also very important if we want lemmy to have a wide variety of good quality content in the future. Speaking as an active poster, the main reward for me is when a post I’ve made get lots of upvotes and comments. I’m willing to keep posting to lemmy for now even though most of my posts here get many fewer upvotes and comments compared to Reddit. However, if several months from now the post response is still at the same level, then my motivation to keep contributing content to lemmy will diminish. It’s the same reason a community with, say, only 20 subscribers gets few if any quality posts while a community on the same topic with 2,000 subscribers gets many quality posts.

Just looking at the current number of lemmy.world subscribers (115k) , lemmy is very, very far from where it needs to be for long term success as a real alternative to other social media sites. There are literally hundreds of subreddits on Reddit that have more subscribers than all of lemmy.world, which is the largest instance. So far the only place I’ve ever seen lemmy mentioned is on Reddit, and even then only in certain subs like r/CenturyClub, which isn’t even public. I think the key to getting new suscribers is for people on twitter, instagram and facebook to start mentioning lemmy on a regular basis and using clickable lemmy links in their posts.

I agree that would be nice to have. There’s “Trending communities” on the main page, but I soon realized they coded that section as “today’s activity level vs. the average level”, which means brand new communities with only one post and no comments were being shown as “trending” since today’s activity is infinitely more than the average for a community that didn’t exist before today.

Most people have jumped onto lemmy.world instead of spreading out.

The main reason I chose lemmy.world is because I wanted to set up a community and my account on an instance that seemed less likely to disappear. I suspect that’s the reason for many others as well, though it might end up being a false hope. Who knows…
