Languages change over time. As long as the intent is clear, don’t get hung up on what is and isn’t “correct”. “You’re welcome” probably was seen as extreme at some point itself.

That feels like a privacy issue, maybe related to the topic of whether or not they can force you to unlock your phone? I don’t know where the current law is on that.
Except for one thing. Unless that society is also a lot different than ours, it would still require the product these companies produce to survive. So maybe a much stronger slap of the hand, but it wouldn’t eliminate them.
Maybe your argument isn’t against Lemmy, but against online discussion in general. Heating debates that break into less constructive postings have been around since the days of BBSes and Usenet. I don’t disagree with your point that people should try to act like adults when discussing topics, but a (not so) different format doesn’t change how people are, especially when they feel protected by anonymity to react badly.
I haven’t seen them in production yet, but for years I’ve heard of the idea of infrared detection in car systems to see warm bodies better at night on a screen or heads up display. There was also the idea of using that along with IR lighting and road markings to light up the road better. Like having high beams on without blinding other drivers, something that is far too common these days.
Just take him out for an all night party to get him drunk, and then accidentally open the door as the sun is rising.
The greatest generation birthed the boomers, who did not live up to their parents’ reputation or expectation.
Yes, with different effects. I’m not saying this will really have a measurable influence, but melt into Greenland waters is far worse than in most other places. Just look into papers discussing the AMOC slowdown and its causes.
It was coined as meaning other people, but words evolve to mean things by their usage over time, and I’m sure carrying it over to other living things is applicable.
I don’t think sonder is the word you were asking about, because the awareness that sonder refers to is only a piece of the whole complexity of reality. As an example, take this video by Epic Spaceman to help show the scale of the galaxy. It’s not sonder, but has that same sense of opening your mind beyond your normal comprehension for a bit.
And the new President doesn’t necessarily have to pick a VP, it’s just expected to fill the vacancy.
Well, it would be pretty suspicious given he’s the world’s healthiest man. /s
You answered all the questions I had when I saw this. It does really depend on the context. Another positive thing might be that the amount of ice they are able to transfer to be used as ice cubes in a drink is less fresh water melt that would have gone into the oceans (affecting things like the AMOC), which is one of many concerns about Greenland’s melting ice.
I guarantee since the first printed material people tended to read the headlines and react first. If there had been a way to post an opinion in a printed newspaper instantly there would have been the same results.
The best part is that you don’t dare question what you do get, or you receive the “well, at least it’s something”. Yeah, I guess so, but if the intent is to make the employee feel valued it’s not working very well. I do have to say that a baked potato is still better than some things I’ve seen posted before.
Way too many good movies to have a single best, but that one is one of my favorites certainly. If I recommend it to someone I avoid any spoiling of the twist because it was so great when it happened. It might be obvious before that point for some, it came from left field for me.
And while I heard the sequel wasn’t all that great, I felt that even if a sequel could be good it was totally unneeded. It’d be like trying to make a second Highlander movie, if one could even imagine that.
Starts off with the right idea, then devolves into corporate speak on empathy and self-help. No mention of the actual problem at hand. I go to work for the paycheck. If you don’t change that variable, why would any of the extra stuff matter? If employees are in some type of shareholder position to gain from better profits at least they get something from working harder, unlike the typical worker of a flat wage/salary.
The Time Traveler’s Wife is an interesting twist on things, including free will. I haven’t seen the series version.
People who tear out of their parking space within a few seconds of getting in, wtf?
Relevant XKCD, just yesterday actually.
“it would have been quicker too had the victim not resisted so much.”
