Proof of work, which becomes computationally expensive to scale, along with other heuristics based on your browser and page interaction. I believe it’s less about clicking the box and what happens after you’ve clicked the box.

Those companies aren’t “the Internet.” They’re products connected to the Internet.
The OP argument is like saying the Internet is dead because Netflix is down.
Doubtful. By far, most servers responsible for Internet traffic are not running crowdstrike software.
This incident was a bunch of fortune 500 companies caught with their pants down.
Exactly. The choice shouldn’t be between some of you are selectively fucked or you are all equally fucked. It should be are you properly compensating for the role or are you just fucking them over.
Putting the kid on parade in a very visible political display limits their ability to “back out” if they choose.
This sounds very much like your own perception and has nothing to do with the kid. It’s the adults in the room politicizing things that should be complete non-issues: how the kid identifies, how certain they are, and whether either aspect changes over time.
I’m sorry but I have no idea what you’re talking about. Can you point to an example where freedom of speech on the left has been restricted?
This certainly seems… problematic. What would “going after” these stations and hosts even look like? Would they be prohibited from discussing certain topics, or operating entirely? Is it only when they’re spreading misinformation? Aside from the obvious 1A issues, how would you prevent abuse when power swings the other way and it’s now the right deciding who to go after?
It’s unclear what this accomplishes. Do you think more people (center-right) will support Democrat candidates if they did these things?
What was it then that drew you out?
Do you have some insight into what the left could do though? I’m frustrated too, but it’s not as though Democrats are voting these people into office. What would “digging these lunatics out” look like and how would it change things?
Storage is probably the easier aspect to address. Storage is cheap and decentralized storage systems have existed for decades.
The problem is bandwidth and latency. Most residential ISPs do not offer high bandwidth and low latency upstream connections, which means there’s no good way to serve the content you’re storing.
Residential fiber is becoming more common in some areas, but often those residential plans still limit upstream or specifically have terms in their acceptable use policy that forbid such activities. Here’s an example from my fiber provider, which couldn’t be clearer:
You may not use the Services to host any type of server.
It’s a little silly of course, because if you were playing a game and hosting, you’re probably hosting a server! But if I were serving videos to thousands of peers, I’m sure they would notice and take issue.
Western attention was already diverted, particularly in the US with Republicans actively blocking support for Ukraine. If anything, the opportunity for this attack was bolstered by Republican MAGA efforts to unseat McCarthy, as the US is further hampered by a dysfunctional House which now cannot approve aid to Israel (or Ukraine) until they select a new speaker.
Hey, there are some fun 3D printing projects you could get into if you look around. Sometimes it’s the perfect tool to launch into a new hobby! I’m working on a hydroponic tower currently, as well as some Mandalorian armor for Halloween.
It’s truly shocking but yes, I don’t immediately change search engine preferences when Edge defaults to Bing now.
Does anyone know if this is coming to (Chrome based) Edge?
For the last year and for all of the crap Google has been changing in Google Chrome, I’ve actually been pretty happy with Edge (never thought I’d be saying that).
Please call them Elon’s x-crements instead.
Its use looks contrived to me on the linked GitHub page. The comparison with @ and # is flawed because those symbols are part of the resource name, whereas here the symbol is superfluous. It’s like adding a 🌐 in front of every web URL.
