A Hungarian doctor tried to combine midwife tradition with his knowledge of modern medicine to get even better results. He required his nurses to clean on a regular basis, and required doctors to wash their hands with a chlorine solution before all medical procedures.

The result was a resounding success, with the complication rate as his facility being better than both the midwives and other doctors. However his methods violated social conventions at the time, so he was shunned from society and considered a disgrace. He died in an insane asylum.

I can talk about Star Wars and basically everyone I know has a lot of context. Most people have watched a good amount of it. Even people who are explicitly not nerds know about it. Same with most comic stuff.

Meanwhile Star Trek is still a lot more niche. People know the bare basics of what it is, but that’s about it. With the exception of my SO, I’ve met a grand total of two people who watch it.

Also if someone knows a lot about Star Wars or Marvel they don’t necessarily know a lot about other nerd IPs. Meanwhile the people who knew about Star Trek also knew about shit like Farscape, Dark Matter, and other IP that just gets confused looks from most people.

The Lemmy community is disproportionately made up of either computer nerds or queer people.

Star Trek is basically the most popular nerd IP that hasn’t been successfully brought into the mainstream, and is known for being progressive.

Look I’m traditionally of the argument that societal degradation narratives are overblown, but the fact that videos where people shove things up their own ass seem to be getting more common every year is a pretty good point in favor of them.

It seems like a lot of tech releases these days are written for non technical journalists (ie The Verge), “tech influencers”, and cargo cultists. They always read in a way that’s super overhyped to the point where you almost want to be dismissive of the end product as a form of protests.

They already allow instance admins to add to the Blocklist. They could simply remove the hard coded one.

For example, they have a hard coded Blocklist. There have been tickets to change this to instance implemented. Every time this comes up, the devs claim that this has already been implemented and lock discussion. However if you actually look at the commit sha the hard coded Blocklist is still in place.

I think most urban liberals would ban hunting given the opportunity, but have enough self awareness to realize that’s an untenable position.

Every single civilization with every single type of governance in human history requires most people to work. That will continue to be the case for a long time into the future.

Is the current system perfect? No. However it does allow for a greater degree of latitude than basically everything that came before it. It also has safeguards to ensure there’s some sort of safety net if you fall on hard times.

You also mentioned democracy. Assuming you live in America, you can vote in a way that introduces reform to the system.

Starting a violent revolution is a last resort sort of thing.
